Our new school year!

What an amazing start! We have had so much fun establishing routine, reviewing math concepts, practicing new ones, learning new games, practicing second grade responsibilities and jobs, reading together, loving partner work, enjoying writers workshop, and finally readers workshop. Wow! We have done a lot in a short time.

Our "typical" day in second grade is well underway. As you can see, we have had a lot of fun coming together as a community in our classroom to help us excel in the learning process.

In math, we have been working a lot with number equations, combinations of ten, and solving story problems. You will see that these are skills that'll be practiced throughout the year, even while being introduced to new skills. Math facts and problem solving are big ideas in second grade. Any chance to allow your second grader to think critically, problem solve, or work with money this year would be fantastic.

We have many writing pieces under our belt and have begun the writing process, even. Thus far, our emphasis has been on establishing ideas to draft about. Our sketches have been amazing.

Reading groups have also begun. Stay tuned for your role in our word detective adventures...

Reading for meaning through visualization has been our kickoff in readers workshop. This visualization leads us to the five W's-who, what, when, where, why while we read.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming parent-teacher-student conference.

Be sure to continue to check out our blog each week.
